Claude Duet opens a research preview and can already connect to Shopify stores

Claude Duet doesn't wait for you to ask before it gets to work. On October 21, Anthropic opened a waitlist for the research preview of the app, a proactive AI agent.

Duet checks and keeps watch over the apps you've connected, messages you when something needs attention, and keeps working after you've stepped away from your computer. Before certain actions, like sending a message or making a payment, it asks you first.

Shopify is one of the tools connected from day one, so store owners can use Duet to build, design and manage their store.

The preview is currently open to Pro and Max users in the US. Whether or not you have access yet, the questions worth asking now are what Duet can help with, what it will flag for you, and what it needs your sign-off on before it acts.

What Duet can do with a Shopify store

According to Anthropic, Duet can build, design and manage a Shopify store. A visual editor that lets you preview the design before publishing is coming later. Shopify also laid out a day-one use case: design your store right in the chat, then use Duet to keep track of sales performance.

What sets Duet apart from the way most people use AI today is that it can raise things from your connected apps on its own.

Every morning, Duet sends a short brief on what matters. Through the day it checks your apps every few hours and messages you when it spots something that needs you. You can tell it what you want to hear about and how often. Duet runs on a virtual machine with its own browser, so your laptop or phone doesn't have to stay on.

Shopify is just one of more than 6,000 connectors and plugins Duet can use through Claude Marketplace, including Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks and Stripe. You could ask Duet to go through unpaid invoices in Stripe and draft reminders to customers, for example, in the same conversation you use to watch your store.

What Duet has to wait for your approval on

Anthropic says that before Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it's about to do and waits for your go-ahead. Some actions are blocked outright even if you agree, such as trading stocks or moving money between accounts.

Duet also never sees your passwords or login codes directly, and you can disconnect any app at any time.

The announcement doesn't say, though, whether Shopify admin actions like changing a price or hiding a product fall into the approval group. Anthropic also admits this first version can still misread a message thread or get the urgency of something wrong.

On the buyer side, Duet can also pay with Shop Pay

Duet isn't only for sellers. According to Anthropic, it can use Shop Pay to check out at online stores and Link, Stripe's digital wallet, to buy things for the user's business. With Link purchases, Duet confirms the item with the user before Link asks them to approve the spend.

Meta and OpenAI already have similar assistants. On October 20, Search Engine Journal broke down Meta Muse and OpenAI dots, two personal AI agents that also find and buy products for their users. For sellers, that means some of the visitors landing on your store may be AI shopping on a customer's behalf.

What to do now

If you're in the US on a Pro or Max plan, you can join the waitlist on the Claude Duet page, and Anthropic will email you when it's your turn. Before you connect anything, though, get three things ready:

  • Write down the store signals you want to hear about early, so you can brief Duet from the start instead of getting every alert.
  • Decide how often you want to get notifications, because Duet's background checks count toward the same usage limit as the rest of Claude.
  • Decide which tasks Duet can only suggest and which it can carry out once you approve.

If you can't use Duet yet, these three are still worth doing, because they're the answers you'll need for any proactive AI assistant. Duet has moved AI from waiting for your question to speaking up first. Stores that already know what they want to be told and which controls they want to keep will have an easier time with this kind of assistant when their turn comes.
