Gap and TikTok put AI at the search box on the same day

On October 5, 2026, Gap Inc. and TikTok both launched AI tools that help shoppers find and pick products. Target highlighted its own in a September blog post. The place where online shopping starts is moving.

Three versions of AI discovery are now live

Gap Inc. rolled out conversational shopping agents for Banana Republic and Old Navy on their websites and apps, Retail Dive reported. Shoppers also get suggestions from two outside platforms. Alta Daily builds outfits around a person's schedule, budget and weather. Daydream suggests fashion from a plain-language description. Gap CTO Sven Gerjets said AI should make shopping easier, without adding complexity or taking choice away from the customer.

The timing is symbolic. Gap Online launched in 1996, and the company framed AI as the next step in how people shop its brands, according to Digital Commerce 360. The money is real too. Gap's capital spending will reach $650 million in fiscal 2026, up from $470 million last year, and CFO Katrina O'Connell said part of it goes to technology work around AI.

TikTok announced its tools the same day, TechCrunch reported. The Shopping Assistant is a chat agent that answers questions on product details, shipping, sizing and availability. Buy Direct lets a viewer buy from a brand in one tap inside the For You feed. The whole trip stays on TikTok. Retail Dive framed it as TikTok building on its role as a "product discovery engine."

Target got there first. In a September 8 blog post, it highlighted Photo Search, which finds products from an uploaded picture, and Review Insights, which summarizes customer reviews, as Digital Commerce 360 noted. Buy Again and Continue Shopping bring back past purchases and recently viewed items. Target says Review Insights has lifted conversions and add-to-cart rates, per Retail Dive.

All three put AI where the shopper is still deciding

None of these tools wait until after the order. They sit at the moment a shopper types a vague idea, asks a question or compares two options. That is the step all three companies are rebuilding.

They split on one point. Gap and Target put their tools on their own sites and apps, though Gap also sends shoppers to two outside platforms. TikTok keeps them inside the feed, from video to checkout.

Shopify's newsroom calls this the first holiday season of the agentic era, with AI rewriting how shoppers discover and purchase. Put next to this week's launches, the pattern is hard to miss. The big players are not adding AI at the edges. They are putting it in the search box.

For a smaller store, that is where shopper expectations will likely shift first. A shopper who asked Old Navy's agent for an outfit in one sentence, or bought from a TikTok video in one tap, may arrive at your product page expecting search and answers that feel just as easy.
