Payment networks race to build 'agentic commerce' rails

On October 28 and 29, 2026, Shopify, Mastercard, Visa and Elavon each announced ways for AI agents to pay on a shopper's behalf.

For a Shopify store, only Shop Pay inside agents and Stripe's Link virtual card already bring in money, and neither changes your card fees or chargebacks.

Which AI agent payments already reach your store?

In Muse, Meta's AI agent, a shopper approves a purchase with an Allow button, and Shop Pay completes the checkout without the agent ever seeing the card. Shopify put Shop Pay inside Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct in its Fall '26 Edition. For agent purchases from merchants off Shopify, tokens from Mastercard, Visa and Discover protect the card, with American Express listed as coming soon.

Link is the second route that pays today. At merchants without Link, Link gives Muse a single-use virtual card for one approved purchase, according to a brief on Stripe's announcement from September 10, 2026. The card works wherever cards are accepted, so a store that takes cards can take it with nothing to integrate.

The other three announcements, two of them from October 29, 2026, are still plans:

Two routes pay stores now. An MoU, a pilot offer and a framework do not.

Why are payment companies racing before shoppers are ready?

Demand has not caught up. Only 16% of 4,000 US consumers in a Deloitte survey trust AI agents to complete purchases, Adweek reported on October 28, 2026, and PYMNTS's report on Mastercard's third-quarter earnings call gives no figure for agent transaction volume.

The race is over who sits between the shopper's card and the agent. On that call, CEO Michael Miebach said Shop Pay uses Mastercard Agent Pay with network tokens, and called virtual card numbers a bridge, "not a long-term solution that we will support." That puts the two live routes on opposite sides: Shop Pay runs on tokens, Link on virtual cards.

Shopify is also taking Shop Pay beyond its own stores. Instinct says it can now check out with Shop Pay at any online store, using the card and address the shopper already saved.

The rails are being laid before the traffic arrives.

Do agent orders change your fees or chargebacks?

Not so far: your rate still follows the card type, and you still carry chargebacks. US interchange schedules from April 2026 have no category for agent payments, and merchants still carry chargebacks on agent sales, Payment Review noted in September 2026.

On Shopify Payments in the US, your rate follows the card type that reaches you, per the Shopify Help Center. Standard covers domestic consumer cards; Premium covers domestic commercial and business cards plus all domestic American Express cards.

Shop Pay agent orders are paid with the card the shopper saved, so they likely land in the same card type as normal orders. No source says which type Link's virtual card counts as.

If you are not on Shopify Payments in the US, this card-type split does not apply to you.

What to do this week

  1. Note your transaction volume by card type in the Payments finance report, so you have a baseline if agent orders grow. Skip this if you are not on Shopify Payments in the US.
  2. Open Knowledge base under Sales channels > Agentic. Agents only get what you publish there, such as return windows and shipping destinations, so check each line against your real policy before Black Friday.

Your fees and chargeback rules are the same as before agents.

What agents read about your store is the part you control now.
