Three changes, one network: Shop Pay and Shopify Payments
Three updates matter here: universal checkout in the Shop app, Shopify Protect, and customer recognition at POS. Universal checkout and the chargeback cover need nothing switched on; the Newsroom post does not mention a setup step for POS recognition. Each works through the same network of shoppers with Shop Pay accounts and stores paid through Shopify Payments.
That condition decides how much changes for you, and the chargeback cover adds one more: it applies only to US stores with a US Shopify Payments account. A store that takes payments through another provider, or whose customers rarely pick Shop Pay, may see little difference this season.
The number worth knowing is your own: the share of your orders paid with Shop Pay.
Will a shared Shop cart take your customers or your discounts?
In the Shop app, one cart can now hold products from several brands and be paid in one go. Harley Finkelstein, Shopify's president and at the company since 2010, wrote on X at launch that nothing changes on the merchant's end: "Every sale is still theirs. Every customer is still theirs."
Harley Finkelstein@harleyfUniversal checkout is now live on Shop. One cart. One checkout. Across brands on the Shop app.
For shoppers, it's the ease of a big marketplace.
For merchants, nothing changes on their end. Every sale is still theirs. Every customer is still theirs. They just end up in more carts.

The Shop Help Center explains what that means for a Black Friday offer. Each store gets its own order and confirmation email, and shipping, taxes, discount codes and gift cards apply to each store's order separately. Your code only touches your order.
Some carts still split by store: items priced in more than one currency, carts that send the shopper to a store's website, and payments that need extra verification, such as Apple Pay, or installments. Paying several stores at once happens only in the Shop app; on shop.com, shoppers pay one store at a time.
There is nothing for you to set up here.
What does Shopify Protect cover for free, and what costs $0.07?
Much of Shopify Protect already runs. In Shopify's launch post, Nick Chen, a director of Shopify Payments and Shopify Protect, writes that much of it works automatically for every business on Shopify Payments, at no extra cost. Near-certain fraud is declined before it reaches the bank, and AI drafts the response when a dispute lands.
The refund is narrower: Shopify covers fraud chargebacks only on eligible Shop Pay orders, with no fee. The Shopify Help Center lists the conditions: a US store with a US Shopify Payments account, physical goods only, valid tracking within 7 days and the parcel in transit within 10. Coverage beyond Shop Pay is listed as next up, with no date.
That cover is worth checking: Shopify puts the full cost of a $100 dispute at about $238.

Chargeback cover applies to eligible Shop Pay orders, and Rule Builder opens through a waitlist. Shopify's launch post on www.shopify.com, captured in October 2026.
The only piece with a listed price is the Rule Builder app. It blocks a payment, asks for 3D Secure or holds an order, and lets you preview each rule on your last 90 days of orders. The app listing says it is free to install, then $0.07 per screened transaction, and the launch post points to a waitlist.
Shopify says built-in blocking comes at no extra cost on Shopify Payments; custom rules in Rule Builder cost $0.07 per screened transaction.
POS recognition only helps if your counter offers a digital receipt
This one touches only stores with a Shopify POS counter. POS now recognizes more in-store buyers through the network of people who have paid at stores on Shopify Payments, according to the Newsroom post. It does so only when the buyer picks a digital receipt and agrees to share their details.
Shopify says a known in-store customer has over 60% higher lifetime value than an unknown one. That figure compares two groups of customers and does not measure what the feature adds.
Helen Mou (@helenmou), who leads product teams on Shopify Retail and earlier led customer analytics for UNIQLO's US business, posted the same figure on X at launch, and added that most in-store purchases are anonymous.
Helen Mou@helenmouA known in-store customer has over 60% higher lifetime value than an unknown one and yet, most in-store purchases are anonymous. We're changing that.
Now, Shopify POS recognizes more buyers at checkout. When the buyer selects a digital receipt, that order now has a known customer associated. Spend less time holding up the line for an email, and more time investing in the lifetime value of your customers.

Online-only stores can skip this part.
What to do this week
- Check whether your store runs on Shopify Payments, and what share of recent orders were paid with Shop Pay. That share sets how much of this Edition reaches you.
- Compare the orders you expect over Black Friday with the chargeback conditions above; orders shipped without valid tracking within 7 days are not covered. Skip this step if your store is outside the US or sells only digital goods.
- Decide on your current fraud or chargeback app before you freeze changes for the sale. If many orders are not paid with Shop Pay or miss the conditions, the built-in refund does not cover them yet, and your app may still be doing that job.
