Shopify's Hydrogen 2026-10 Changelog also recommends that teams using Next.js use this template as their starting point.
Put simply, Vercel Shop only replaces the front-end storefront that buyers see, while all core e-commerce operations remain hosted on Shopify. According to Vercel, Hydrogen acts as the bridge that allows the Next.js storefront to pull product catalogs, carts, orders, checkout, and payments directly from the Shopify store.
Consequently, merchants continue managing products and orders within the Shopify admin just like before—only the homepage, product pages, or cart are built and updated through code by dev teams instead of editing a traditional theme.

For agencies with clients running Next.js, Vercel Shop provides a fast launching pad for a store that AI agents (software that acts on behalf of buyers to search, compare, and add items to carts) can easily read and interact with. However, there are three key points agencies should clarify with clients before adopting this template for a project.
Agent Tools Run Independently Without Requiring an On-Site Assistant
According to Vercel, the template includes two dedicated features for external AI agents, such as the personal AI assistants used by buyers:
- Machine-readable product pages: Using the exact same URL, human shoppers see a standard visual page, while AI agents receive structured data containing prices, stock availability, and product options without having to parse the visual layout.
- Domain-hosted purchasing tools: The template exposes tools following the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)—a protocol co-developed by Shopify—directly on the store's domain. Agents can discover products and build carts through these endpoints without ever opening a browser page.
This architecture differs from WebMCP. According to Shopify, as of August 5, 2026, the WebMCP toolset comes pre-integrated on all stores using Liquid themes. WebMCP allows agents to search products, manage carts, and proceed to checkout directly within the buyer's active tab. Per the announcement, WebMCP is currently only accessible on Chromium-based browsers via an origin trial. In contrast, Vercel Shop allows agents to invoke tools directly on the domain, completely independent of any active browser tab.
Additionally, the template includes an on-site shopping assistant for human visitors. Vercel decoupled this assistant from the two agent features above. As a result, merchants can leverage machine-readable pages and UCP tools without ever enabling the AI assistant.

Consider AI Costs and Data Privacy Before Turning On the Shopping Assistant
According to Vercel Shop documentation, the assistant is disabled by default and runs via Vercel's AI Gateway. Every message can incur AI model API costs, and chat sessions have no built-in spending cap. Because of this, engineering teams must manually set rate limits and spend caps on the AI Gateway.
When enabled, the assistant can perform the following tasks:
- Search for products and select variants;
- Answer questions regarding store policies;
- Add or remove items from the cart;
- Apply discount codes provided by the buyer.
The assistant shares the same cart session as the web page, but it cannot place orders or process payments—buyers must still manually click the checkout button.
Data handling policies should also be disclosed to clients upfront:
- Anyone with access to a session ID can read or hijack that conversation. A buyer logging into their user account does not automatically make the chat history private.
- Chat contents are stored on servers and forwarded to AI model providers. Conversations automatically expire after 30 days.
The documentation advises using the chat interface for account-level data or post-purchase support only after properly pairing each conversation session with an authenticated user account (authenticated conversation ownership). If a client wants the assistant to handle order lookup queries, agencies must scope this as additional development work.
Agents Can Only Echo What Your Product Pages Explicitly State
While machine-readable pages help agents extract exact pricing and product options, the actual selling points still depend entirely on written content.
In their article on the 2026 holiday season, Shopify highlighted that agents "can only reiterate the arguments a brand has already put forward." When comparing products, price is immediately visible to agents. However, who the product is for and why it's worth buying must be explicitly articulated in places accessible to AI readers.
Therefore, whether clients choose Vercel Shop or stick with a traditional theme, the most critical pre-holiday task is reviewing and optimizing top-selling product descriptions. For clients opting for Vercel Shop, the next step is deciding whether to enable the AI assistant—and establishing strict budget caps and data governance rules right from day one.
